No need to fear! Your Digital Navigator is here!

Forest County and the NDIA Grant

In September, Forest County was awarded a grant in partnership with the National Digital Inclusion Alliance along with 17 other organizations across the county to improve digital equity in their communities. The goal of this grant is to provide the community with a Digital Navigator to assist primarily with getting access to internet services, affordable and appropriate devices, and growing digital skills.

Forest County that day has finally arrived!

My name is Steve Watson, I’m a Wabeno resident and the County’s new Digital Navigator.

What is a Digital Navigator?

Since we started rolling forward with the program this is the question that comes up most often. “Navigator” sounds like an awfully strange title for someone doing Tech Support. That’s only part of the role for a Digital Navigator, the rest is evaluating their clients needs and facilitating their goals using a wide range of tools and programs to assist them. When it comes to digital equity a Digital Navigator is more like a case worker than a technician.

They get their name because like the Navigator on a ship or plane, they guide community members toward their goals!

What is Digital Equity?

Digital Equity is about taking a “right tool for the job” approach to combat the growing digital divide. Over time there’s been a growing rift between those who have devices, internet access, and the knowledge to use them and those who do not. There’s not a “one size fits all” solution to this problem, digital equity means finding the right solution that works for the individual. For some this might mean just a few pointers, others might just need help finding the right device to fit their needs or even just getting basic access to the internet.

Whatever the need the Digital Navigator is here to help!

What can my Digital Navigator do for me?

The National Digital Navigator Corps focuses on three main areas to serve their communities. We’re finding these are very broad terms and we have a lot of flexibility to serve our local area.

            Access

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected through the internet it’s becoming more and more important that everyone have access. From accessing basic online services to simple things like socializing and entertainment everyone deserves the right to get connected. To that end, part of the program is trying to provide free or low-cost internet through the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).

That said if you have home network issues or trouble with your ISP that may be something your Digital Navigator can assist with.

            Devices

Are you looking to build your own computer but don’t know how to get started? Do you have a small business and aren’t sure what technology best suits your needs? Is there a device you really need but can’t afford? Does your computer or phone keep having issues and you’re tired of dealing with it? These kinds of questions and more are those your Digital Navigator can help you with!

            Digital Skills

Growing the digital skills of the community is likely the broadest goal of the program, but also the most fun! It covers everything from one-on-one training on basic computer use to providing classes for the whole community. Whether it be having trouble opening documents, sending emails, or even getting into programming, the Digital Navigator is here to help. Whatever the need, the important part is that we’ll learning together.

Who qualifies for these benefits?

You do!

Anyone in our community can reach out for one-on-one help. Be on the lookout for other ways you can get involved too!

As the project begins, we’ve already discussed partnering with Libraries, Schools, Local Government, Tribal Organizations, local businesses, and more!
